Welcome to the January edition of this superior monthly literary masterpiece. We’re back to normal now (well, as normal as it gets here) after getting the kids back into school and Michelle and Dave working off all of those NZ Barbecues, Xmas Dinners, Pies, Beers, Wines, Rums, Fish & Chips and Chocolate that we indulged in while back in the home land.
Apple Bay - Behind Bomba's
As some of you read this you will be bleary eyed and possibly a little hungover after another massive party at the Sevens in Wellington. Don't worry about us. We're OK in our tiny little island in the dead of winter.... No really, we'll be alright... honest.
What have we got for you this month? Heaps!!!
What have we got for you this month? Heaps!!!
Well, not that much really. But enough to fill in that little gap when you are hanging out for smoko maybe.
Remember, if you haven’t caught up for a while (or ever) the older stuff is available under the "Archive" section over there to the right. Yep, just there.
Signs
I promised signs. So here are some signs. They aren’t big on advertising here. You are supposed to know where things are and who sells what. But there are people that have been here for years and they still get surprised by news of some shop (or hovel) that sells ‘whatever’ and have done for ever. It’s a learning experience for all. Anyway, rather than bore you with a shop sign that says very little, here's a couple from around here that are at least a little bit interesting:

Not sure what to say about that

Rugby
Jake – he goes to “littlies rugby” on a Friday after school. This is coached by his teacher and Dave with Sam the expert and demonstrator helping out. On his first day of coaching (the Teacher was away too) Dave was relieved to learn that Jake wasn’t the only 4/5 year old boy to be deaf and have the attention span of a Goldfish. They were all like that! So the first session was a bit of a challenge, but the kids had fun. The next week Dave came armed with a whistle, and the teacher. Things went a lot smoother and the kids can now actually catch a ball (when they are not gazing at clouds or birds or whatever happens to grab their attention at the time.).
Dave – currently in training for games in Feb. Trials this Thursday at training where they will play Full contact sevens in order to pick a side for the Michigan side that is touring here in three weeks. After the trial Bomba, in his infinite generosity, is shouting 12 dozen beers. Dave will be there.

Michelle – the ladies are slowly getting more physical at training and it sounds as though the team has come a long way since their first session last year. No games on the horizon just yet, but we look forward to a demonstration game as a curtain raiser to one of the Michigan games in February.
Tennis
The kids are still going strong under the tutelage of the Sports Club Tennis coach. Sam has been asked to step up to the next level and we’ll just have to sort out some logistical issues before that happens. But she is doing well.
Jake is also improving and enjoys hitting the ball. Sometimes out of the park, which doesn’t go down that well with the coach. He thinks Dad isn’t watching, but Dad sees all of this from his perch on the balcony of the clubrooms where he gets a bird’s-eye-view of the happenings on court and also a Carib or two.
The new board He's up!
Surfing
Jake. Santa dropped off a brand new 5’ “Liquid Shredder” for Jake. It was here when we got back from NZ, which was nice of Santa. Dave and the kids have headed down to the beach a couple of times after school (Mondays and Thursdays at the moment) for a bit of a surf and we have all gone on the weekend a few times as well. Jake just loves it! He can’t get enough and was almost blue by the time we dragged him out of the water last week. He has started to stand up now as well and Dave has had him paddling out through the surf a lot more so he gets used to that and also builds up his arms a bit.
The beach was closed the other day because of the huge swell. Dave took the kids down to have a look. Jake wanted to go out “’Cos I’m a good surfer Dad.” But no. It was far too rough. Watch this space…
Poser..... Some people just can't help themselves...
Dave. Dave has been trying to get his own board for a while now. He didn’t want to go straight out and buy a new board without having a decent go at surfing first. So over the last month or so he’s been going out for a wee surf here and there and borrowing or hiring a board each time. A couple of the other ‘mums’ at school were keen to get out and surf as well so instead of having a coffee morning, they head down to Josiah’s for a “Surf Morning” instead. It’s quite good as there aren’t a lot of real ‘surfies’ about to watch them thrashing about in the water and a couple of the lifeguards (Expat Saffers, Ozzies and Kiwi’s) are usually there to offer some professional guidance which is always appreciated. The group has been going for a month now and last week they went out on Friday as well as the usual Wednesday! Dave will be catching up on Jake soon!
Josiah's yesterday... a bit rough for us grommetts to go out.... coffee instead.
The smiles say it all...
Sam. Santa delivered a boogie board for Sam as she wasn’t that keen on surfing. But after a few good rides on the boogie board she’s usually keen for a crack on Jake’s board. Being a little bit more risk averse than her brother, Sam has started kneeling on Jake’s board with no hands and will attempt to stand in the not too distant future. We’ll watch Sam with interest too.
Visitors….who’s next?
Rumour has it that some folk are about to be shipwrecked with us next month. We’ll pour a few beers down their throat and have them write some nice things about the place for the next issue.

Fauna
Spider. We were driving down the long driveway the other night when we saw something in the headlights dangling from a vine in the centre of the road. Thud! “Hmmm, wonder what that was” we said. As we pulled up beside the house we saw a spider climbing across the windscreen. Dave tried to wipe it off with the wipers, but they just bent in half and ceased to work. The spider was about the size of a small planet. Next, Dave got out and whacked it with his Jandal/thong/Flip-flop. The spider grabbed it off him and demanded the other seven. We fled inside and haven’t seen him since.
Frog out on the balcony.... and an Iguana

Snake
Dave came home with the groceries the other week and saw a small snake slithering across the stones. It was only about two feet in length and no thicker than a finger. Apparently they are harmless. We haven’t told the kids about it although they did chase a snake around the bar in the Tamarind Club late last year and they didn’t seem too concerned about that.

Weather watch
It’s been very wet since coming back after Christmas. Not a lot of sun around either during this part of the ‘dry’ season. Temperature during the day has generally been mid 20’s with the odd 28/29 and quite a few low 20’s just to give the ski jackets and sweaters a chance to get out of the house. And believe me they do! On the cooler days it’s not uncommon to see people walking around wearing those big thick padded ski jackets. The kids have a light sweatshirt in their schoolbags in case they get cold – but that is generally because of the aircon in their class. But there has been the odd occasion where they keep the extra top on when outside. Dave has even donned a t-shirt so it must be cold.
We’re told that it starts getting warmer again in Feb/March. So we’ll see. The days are getting a little longer though.
Jake’s Birthday
We had a party for Jake on the Sunday before his birthday (22nd) It was a pool party at a local resort! In the rain! The kids didn’t care about the rain, they were in the pool and getting wet anyway. The parents weren’t so lucky as there wasn’t a lot of shelter at the venue. Luckily we’d packed all the umbrellas we could find!
(Top) Jake and 'The Missus" ...... (Bottom) Some of the Lads
But the kids all had fun. One threw up in his Mother’s car on the way home. Another needed stitches in his leg after slipping into the pool. Apart from that – a pretty successful day!
Quiz Night
The rugby club recently ran a quiz night at Mulligan’s (yes, another pub) to raise money for the kids rugby. Dave went along after training as it was on a Thursday – a bit too late for the kids to attend. There was a great turnout – about 25 teams. Prior to the night, Dave only had one other team mate – one of the girls from Michelle’s work. By the time things got started they had recruited a team of six. It was a fun night. They didn’t win, but put that down to dodgy judges and the effects of one or two beers and wines. All in a good cause though because $1 from each beer went to the club.
The team!
Is that a bar they're propping up?
So it is, what a surprise!
The Rat count (continued…)
Well, there we were. Having a few beers out the back the other night with some friends when a furry critter wanders past, tips his hat and then continues over to where the kids were eating and started gobbling up the crumbs and scraps that kids leave. It wasn’t the big guy. Just ‘Joe Average’ as far as rats go. We suspect that the Big Guy has gone for good. Anyway, we put the trap out again and within about five minutes… Whack!. “Got eeeemmmm!!!! Yes!!!” In the words of Freddy Mercury “Another one bites the dust!!!”
So that makes it 5 Rats and one Bird – to Nil.

Oh yeah, don't forget to check out the video clip at the bottom
Next month.
What’s up next month? It doesn’t stop I tell ya! We’ve got two rugby game reviews to file. Maybe a visitor’s report. A Surf Update. Maybe we’ve even been somewhere by then? Not sure. Oh yeah, we’d better have a look at putting a video of our driveway on too! Hmmm, sounds like a job for our Stunt people and also the IT division.
Anyway, whatever we chuck in, I’m sure it’ll be up there with NZ Stuff and Trademe for reader views….
And guess what!!!! We are excited to announce that Blogger is now available in three more languages: Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian!
(We found that to be absolutely riveting news… Salaam Alekum! Shalom! & Bremworth! Or whatever Persians say).
See y’all next month!!!!
P.s. this is a brief video of a Stingray near one of the pubs here.
