Issue # 62 - October Breeze

. Oct 2012 .

Well, Hello! .
Here we are, still surviving after the latest hurricane. Well, to be fair, we didn't actually get very much at all from Hurricane Sandy. Although Jamaica which is close, took a bit of a pounding, we got off very lightly indeed.  A bit of rain and some high seas. Not much else.

Apologies for the delay in publication. Some of the editing staff couldn't quite bring themselves to actually do any editing until just now. More on that in next month's issue.
But during the month of October we have been fairly busy. Dave has been busy coaching a Women's team in the local club Sevens competition which lasts for all of October. Michelle has been in training for the Cayman Triathlon, which is tomorrow. Sam has been doing lots of swim training. Jake has been getting into the Rugby, and both of them sailed in the recent National Regatta.

The weather has become a little cooler now that 'winter' is almost upon us. There is a noticeable drop in the temperature and it is actually a very pleasant time of year, climate-wise.

Anyway, all the good stuff is below, so hook in!

Sailing
I think it's that way...maybe.
Sam and Jake both entered in the Kids National Sailing regatta which was held recently.  Sam sailed with a friend from School (Jade) and Jake went out and sailed solo, which was a pretty big call.
Scored some booty!
The first day the winds were very light and the kids were out cooking on the water for about 3 hours, not going very fast at all. Those conditions suited Jake because he was so light. He ended the day with a First, a third and a 6th. Putting him in 3rd place overall for the day.  Great work Jake!
Sam and Jade had a bit more weight in their boat and tended to struggle throughout the afternoon. They ended the day at the tail of the field, but had some fun anyway.
Fifty lashes ye scurvy dog!

There's a race going on there somewhere
The second day winds were much stronger and Jake was forced to reef his sail in a bit, which meant he would get less speed in his boat, but would also be a bit more stable. Despite the conditions he stayed with it and finished the Regatta one place back in 4th.
The second day's conditions suited Sam and Jade a little better and they had several strong races. They won at least two races and placed pretty well in the others. In the end they did so well that they ended up in 2nd place overall.  Great comeback!

Pretty happy with their second day form

Swimming
After some technical hitches with the pool and some weather-related cancellations, the kids finally got a couple of swim meets out of the way. One was a sprint meet at their home pool where they managed to get some good results and continue to lower their PBs. Their new coach is doing really well and their swimming continues to improve. Sam's goal is to make the Cayman Swim team for CARIFTA in April. She does however, have plenty of competition.
Jake won't be old enough for CARIFTA but he continues to improve with his swimming too. It also helps with his rugby as he has put on a bit of muscle over that last few months.
They also swam in the "Spooky Splash" at Camana Bay. Again they both did well in their events coming away with good times and "spooky" medals as well!

Weather
You'll be aware that Hurricane Sandy made it's mark in the US last week. It also passed by here, but Cayman escaped any serious weather conditions.
The seas were quite high and the rain came, but not enough to do any serious damage.
This is across the road from our house.
We usually do our sea swims and sometimes dive along here.

Sunrise from our place

This is where we normally swim in the morning

Even the beaches were rough
Michelle was off with the kids for the week as it was Mid term break. Last year we went away for the week but elected to stay home this time since we'd done plenty of travelling already this year, with maybe some more to come! It was quite nice to have a Staycation and hang out and relax with the kids but it ended up being quite busy! They tried to do something each day but it had to fit in around swimming training - Sam's was in the morning and Jake's in the afternoon (Michelle even managed a couple of Master's sessions) not leaving a huge amount of free time during the day - they went out for lunch at Camana Bay, went to the movies, went to Rum Point with friends, hung around a friend's pool for an afternoon, went to brunch and played tourists at one of the hotels. Michelle got a bit bored the last day as her friends were at work and she forgot to take her book, meanwhile the kids had a great time in the pool and wavy sea with their friends. They then stopped in to Michelle's work to farewell one of her colleagues and have some cake - a nice way to end the week!
After a massive brunch...

Time for some fun!

Go the Hoff!

Beach Sunday!
Sundays often find us spending the afternoon at the beach with friends. This particular Sunday looked a little bit iffy weather-wise. But the rain doesn't usually hang around for long so we decided to have a crack.
It bucketed down. And it didn't stop. It continued to pour and pour.
Luckily we had a tent to keep our things mostly dry...
Love the beach on a Sunday!
It was warmer in the water, and the beach umbrellas proved to be useful.

Notice the fingers strategically placed over the bottle to prevent water damage to the beer.

The kids dig for some shelter

Boogie boards have more than one use too!

Rain drops keep falling on my head...

Hats were useful too!

The sun finally came out. Just in time to go down...
Sevens
Dave and a couple of other guys started coaching Women's teams for the October Sevens at the club. They had quite a few new girls who had never even seen the game before so the coaching was not without its challenges. They had two training sessions before the games started. The first game was a bit of an eye-opener for most of the team and they were soundly beaten. But not before they put a few good tackles in and had a few runs with the ball. The second game was an improvement and they even managed to score a try! They were narrowly beaten 7 - 5.
The following weeks saw a similar pattern but there was continued improvements in each game and the newer girls, some of which aren't exactly midgets, learned that they could actually run with the ball, smash people out of the way and also make telling tackles. It was great to see, and even some of the club stalwarts who believe that women in the Rugby club should only be serving behind the bar were heard to remark how impressed they were with the skill and commitment of the ladies.
The final Saturday came around and the girls were feeling pretty good about their new found talent and ability. They pretty much controlled possession for the match and scored some very nice tries. Their defence was brutal and they kept the opposition scoreless. First win!!
In the second game they scored a couple of great tries but the opposition, who had been dominant the whole competition and were showing signs of panic threw in their experienced big guns to come back and pip them at the finish, three tries to two. The girls were pretty happy though and enjoyed their after match beers well into the night.
The next mission is to take a team to the Cuba Sevens at the end of November. We'll see if that comes off.

Halloween
Halloween is pretty big in these parts. The Rugby club runs an annual Halloween Party which is always popular. There were over a thousand at this years and the standard of costume and the efforts that some people go to was just amazing.
Michelle and Dave went as a Persian Princess, and Prince.
One woman came up to Dave and said "Are you Aladdin?"
"Yes" says Dave.
Royalty has it's perks

Found him!

Spooky!

Beach Sunday (Episode II)
We found a Sunday with some sun in it so headed to the beach, for a change.
Kids had a ball!

The surf was still up. Great for the Boogie boards.

The kids would have stayed there all night they were having so much fun!

This usually means it's time to pack up and head home after another Sunday funday.

Kid's Halloween
October 31st means trick or treat time for the kids.
They got into their outfits and we headed around to a friend's place where all the kids ganged up and then headed out for the annual pilgrimage.
